FRED'S
BOAT SHOP (Page 4 of 7)
"Among the boats now at Fred's Boat Shop is the 23 foot motorboat on
which my father would take me as a child, lobstering or landing on Coney
or Misery Island in Salem Sound. I was so enchanted by these experiences
that ten years later, as a teenager, I began building a 15' peapod
rowboat, the one on page 402 of Howard Chapelle's 1941 book
Boatbuilding. When the peapod was finished, my project was to land on
every island I could in Salem Sound. I may be one among the very few
persons who have stood in spots like the Dry Breakers just north of the
Gooseberry Islands."
I met Deb at Fred's Boat Shop, and she was kind enough to let me roam
around at will taking pictures for a couple of hours. The shop itself is
truly a classic -- complete with wood burning stove, slanted floors,
barn-style doors, and a workbench that must span forty feet and is
crowded with tools, parts, paint cans, batteries, chargers, boxes,
fasteners -- you name it! The yard itself contains about 30 boats --
mostly wooden, a couple of Chris Crafts, plus a few fiberglass runabout
hulls -- as well as campers, old cars, a van, and an engine block or
two. Unfortunately, many of the wood boats stored there have seen better
days, but there are a few that can likely be saved, including a 23-foot
lobster boat, a 38-foot pilot boat, and possibly others. Some of the
shop's woodworking tools -- a band saw, a thickness planer, a table saw,
and a drill press -- may also make good additions to someone's workshop.
Deb is trying to sell off as much of the yard and shop contents as she
can. I will post many of the photos that I took on the Bone Yard Boats
website. If you see something that interests you, please contact Deb at
fredsboatyard@yahoo.com. (...and thanks, Fred, for your service and
contribution to boatbuilding.)
