Sticking out of the "restoration shop"

09/08/09: Note
how far beyond the end of the cradle the bow extends. Her bow's been
unsupported like that for years. Does not appear to be any lasting
damage. Regardless, I blocked her up to support that bow while in the
garage.

09/08/09: Bow
showing some rot and two spots worn by rubbing against something. Bow
light not original.

1956 CENTURY VIKING 19'
Here are the
first 10 photos of the Bone Yard Boats 1956 Century Viking 19' as of
September 8, 2009. This boat was on a cradle so we had to move her
on a tilting flatbed with a winch. After traveling the 75 miles
from Cape Cod to Boston's North Shore, we lowered the boat and cradle
onto four round fence posts in my driveway. Then, it was a simple
process of rolling her into the garage. Well, truth be told it
wasn't exactly that simple, but that's a tale for another day!
The Century was
restored in the mid-1990s by Dave Peterson of The Wooden Tangent in
Mattapoisett, MA. She was used off & on for a few years after
restoration, and then she came out of the water for the last time in the
late 1990's. She sat outside for the past decade or so, some of that
time under cover and some of that time exposed.
What I have tried to
do here is document her existing condition with these photos. As work
progresses, more photos will be added showing all phases of the restoration.
I have already
received generous advice from members of the Bone Yard Boats crowd regarding
mechanics with Graymarine knowledge, as well as where to find parts.
As specific issues arise during the restoration, I will figure out a way to
post questions on the website to gather answers and advice. After all,
who has more collective wooden boat restoration knowledge than the Bone Yard
Boats crew!
By the way, isn't
that propeller over the garage door just awesome!

how the tachometer goes from right to left instead of left to right.
Also, the rotating digits are -- or, more accurately, were -- tracking shaft
revolutions in thousands. (Sorry about the camera reflection in the
glass.)
