9 -- SAVING A PIECE OF HISTORY (3 of 3)
"The other trouble spot that I got into was that I had never done any
major work on a boat in this sort of shape. When I got her out of the
water into the warm California sun she sprang open like a cheap suit.
Paint, buff and polish stuff yes, but not rip, tear and replace. I guess
the worms holding hands could not keep her together any longer. I had
the good fortune to have her on the hard in a boatyard with a bunch of
"wooden heads" that where more than willing to give of their knowledge.
I was on a real learning curve, flying by the set of my pants. I must
say that I will always remember how willing wooden boat guys were to
help out when they found out the history of #9 and why I was the crazy
guy trying to save a bit of our local history."
John has clearly earned himself a position among the ranks of Bone Yard
Boats Wooden Boat Champions. I find it hard to believe that OLD NO. 9
could have looked any better on the day she was first launched in 1942.
An honorable mention goes out to that bunch of "wooden heads" who helped
John and "wooden heads" everywhere who freely give their time and
knowledge to others to help save our maritime heritage one boat at a
time. Special thanks go to Jerry Manson, Photographer of the Orange
County Sheriff's Department, and George Ridley, Professional Services
Responder. George took the photos of OLD NO. 9 on launch day, and Jerry
was kind enough to send me a CD loaded with great color pics of OLD NO.
9. I'll post several on the BYB website, so be on the lookout.
