NEW TO BONE YARD BOATS?

On very rare occasions, I will make a special boat listing / story publicly available if I think it does a good job communicating the Bone Yard Boats mission and illustrating how the old boat community comes together to keep these treasures afloat. The following is such a boat listing:

*** *** *** *** *** *** ***

ORIGINAL BOAT LISTING FROM AUGUST 2011:

1957 ATKIN CRUISER 34'.  The boat owner, Kenneth, says, "The following is a brief recap of the history of my boat:  It is a 34' Atkins deign cruiser, built in 1957 by Becker Boat Works in Amityville, N.Y. for B. Klemens, who owned her for 9 years. She was then given to me by my dad. I've taken care of her for the past 45 years. She was refastened and a new transom and the engines were overhauled about twenty years ago. She has twin 135 fresh water-cooled Palmer engines, with monel fuel tanks.

"We had many great vacations on her to Block Island, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Also, many fishing trips off Fire Island in the fall for cod.  She needs a good home for such a dependable boat. Free to the right person. Contact Ken at [contact info removed]"  (NY)

PHOTO CREDIT: The photos of this boat were provided by longtime BYB subscriber Bob Tansey. Bob went to check out this Atkin-designed boat and took the photos in July (2011). He also left a copy of Bone Yard Boats for Mr. Klemens, suggested BYB as a good means of finding the right new home for this cruiser, and offered to supply BYB with the photos. This is not the first time that Bob has helped spread the word of the Bone Yard Boats mission, which proves -- once again -- that this is a community effort. Now, let's see if we can find someone to keep this unique boat afloat for the next 54 years.

THIS BOAT HAS BEEN "ADOPTED" AND IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE.  CONTACT INFO REMOVED.

UPDATE 9/21/11:  After playing phone tag with Ken for a couple of days, we finally connected on 9/20 as I was driving back to MA from a trip to Vermont. He said that he had received over 40 inquiries from the Bone Yard Boats email outreach campaign that began in late August, and according to Ken, "Not a one of them had high blood pressure. You know what I mean?"

In the end, the new owner of Ken's Atkin was the person who had a plan that he believed would be kindest to the boat. Most people would have to trailer the boat to their locations, and he did not like the thought of someone trailering his 54 year old boat. Someone even mentioned putting it in a container and shipping it through the Panama Canal to the West Coast.

He chose the person who could tow the boat 20 miles to a boat yard that he believed had a marine railway. Ken worries about the boat being so close. He's not sure he wants to see her again after letting her go. I said it may be bitter-sweet if you see her again, but think how great it will be if she's looking like new. He agreed and said that was the whole idea.

Another beautiful old boat safe from the chain saw.  For now anyway...

Then, Ken mentioned that a local boat yard had just sawed the transom off a 38' Matthews, and they had it out on the roadside with a 'for sale' sign on it. Ouch.
